Learn Calq: a building from A to Z / Part 11 Exchange

Trace over a drawing

Lay a plan image under the model, set its true scale from one known length, and draw the walls over it.

You will bring in the ground floor plan of the worked project as an image, scale it by its 24.30 m front and trace its outer walls.

The files this lesson uses: plan.png

01Lay the image

Open the Bring in toolset and choose Underlay, then the image: a PNG or a JPEG of a scan, a sketch or a survey. The file this lesson uses is offered above. The image lies under the model, in every plan and in the 3D, and the From an image drawer opens beside it with Show the image, its Strength and Set its scale.

The image is a reference: nothing is added to the model until you draw.

Underlay: the plan image laid under the model.

02Set its scale

Press Set its scale, click the two ends of a length you know, here the outer faces of the front wall, and type its real length in Real distance: 24.3, then Enter. Calq scales the image so that the line measures 24.30 m, and Fit on the view strip frames it.

Measure the longest length the drawing states: a small error on a short line grows across the whole plan.

Set its scale: two points 24.30 m apart.

03Trace the walls

Open the Walls and openings toolset and choose Wall rect. On the cursor line, set THK, the thickness, to 0.3, then click two opposite corners on the centre lines of the drawn walls: four walls, 300 mm thick, stand on the image. Draw the partitions the same way with Wall, 0.15 thick.

04See it in 3D

Click 3D on the view strip, then Fit: the four walls stand on the storey, 300 mm thick. Once the drawing is traced, lower its Strength or turn Show the image off in the drawer.

With Calq AI (Professional), From image in the same toolset reads the walls, openings and rooms off the image itself, and builds nothing until you press Create.
