Learn Calq: a building from A to Z / Part 10 Checks and data

Fabric, daylight, carbon and cost

Read the model's fabric against an energy standard, its daylight, its embodied carbon against the RIBA and LETI targets, and an indicative build cost.

On the sample house, you will check its fabric against two standards, read its daylight, its upfront carbon and its build cost.

Every figure is read from the assemblies the model's types carry, and each is indicative: not a SAP or SBEM assessment, a whole-life carbon assessment or a RICS cost plan. The drawer says so beside each one.

01Fabric and compliance

Open Performance & carbon from the Data menu. The Fabric tab checks each type of the envelope against the standard's limit on its U-value (ISO 6946): under UK Part L 2021 - limiting, the house loses 109.31 W/K, its average U is 0.32 W/m2K and its glazing is 5% of its wall. Five types pass and two fail: the shopfront door and the roof.

Choose another standard under Standard (Part L notional, ASHRAE 90.1, Passivhaus): the same types are held to its limits at once. Under Passivhaus, none of the seven passes.

Fabric: each type against the standard's limit, then held to Passivhaus.

02Daylight

The Daylight tab reads the drawn windows and rooms: the window-to-wall ratio (9%), the rooms' average daylight factor (1.5%) and the window-to-floor ratio (13%). The house reads as under-glazed and moderately daylit.

03Embodied carbon

The Carbon tab gives the upfront embodied carbon, modules A1 to A3 (the product stage), from the assemblies and their openEPD factors: 35.6 t in all, 226 kgCO2e per m2. It is measured against the RIBA 2030 target and LETI bands A and B, and meets all three.

By group splits it between structure, envelope and finishes, material by material, and Reduce carbon names the swaps that would save the most.

04Indicative cost

The Cost tab gives an order-of-magnitude build cost from the same assemblies, at material and labour rates with 20% on-costs: the total and the cost per m2, split between the envelope, the substructure and frame, the openings and the internal finishes.
